Hypothyroidism and Panic Attacks

It is not uncommon to see hypothyroidism and panic attacks in the same sentence. They are so related that they display similar signs and symptoms, and hypothyroidism is likely to trigger panic attacks. Although not a set prognosis, and there may very well be alternative reasons for the attacks, when an affected person is diagnosed with hypothyroidism, he or she may very well suffer from panic attacks as well.

Hypothyroidism

The thyroid gland is recognized as one of the biggest endocrine glands within the human body. The Link between Thyroid Problems and Panic Attacks

What Is My Coccyx?

Your coccyx is commonly referred to as your tailbone because it somewhat matches up to animals’ tails. The coccyx is located at the end of your spine and is shaped like an inverted triangle, composed of three to five vertebrae. These vertebrae may either be fused together or not. The coccyx is attached to the sacrum which forms the back of your pelvis, by ligaments. Coccyxes vary from individual to individual through their appearances just like everybody else’s lips, nose, and eyes.

Function

The coccyx, having said is a part of human vestigiality which means those human parts that lost their original function through evolution. The coccyx is the remains of humans’ lost tail which was present for a total of four weeks during the stages 14-22 of human embryogenesis. However, although considered as vestigial, your coccyx is not completely useless as it does several functions for the body. For one, it is importantly attached to various muscles like the levator ani muscle, tendons, and ligaments which include the anterior and posterior sacrococcygeal ligaments, anterior and posterior longitudinal ligaments, sacrospinous and sacrotuberous ligaments. Secondly, the coccyx supports the positioning of the anus and acts as a support and weight-bearing body part when a person is sitting or leaning forward.

Coccyx and Injuries and Diseases

The coccyx, just like any other part of your body may be susceptible to injuries. Injuring your coccyx may lead to a condition referred to as coccydynia or tailbone pain. Coccydynia or tailbone pain refers to the inflammation of the coccyx which causes intense pain and tenderness around the part that is worsened when a person is sitting. This can be quite painful. A person with a painful coccyx condition will usually opt to stand for long periods of time, rather than have to sit and risk discomfort.

Another disease connected with your coccyx are tumors, particularly sacrococcygeal teratoma, which refer to benign tumors that commonly occur among children and newborn. These are usually surgically removed.

Last of the conditions involving your coccyx is coccygeal hernia. This condition is a complication caused by coccygectomy which is the operation done to people with coccygeal tumors and coccdenia.

Although often treated as vestigial or somewhat useless, your coccyx is still a part of your body that is susceptible to pain, injuries, and diseases. It should be taken care of properly and if in pain, professional advice should be sought..

Automotive Lighting With LEDs

Most stories you read tend to present lighting or the devices that are used to create lighting, especially in the automobile scene, as two technologies, that is incandescent and arc lights.

This is because up until recently that pretty much covered the whole automobile lighting paradigm.

We of course also have gas-filled and solid state lasers, or turning electricity into light, and of course light emitting diodes.

Laser light technology is currently not considered a cost-effective solution in the automotive application. This of course is due to the humongous cost at this point in time.

This brings us to light emitting diode, or more commonly LED, technology as an automotive lighting application. Which up until recently was also too expensive to consider as an automotive solution to lighting efficiency.

The LED is of course one of the most efficient energy conversion methods to turn electricity into light. It is up there with the efficiency of low vapor lamps.

They can operate directly off low voltage batteries without any for complex voltage regulators or converters. This is perfect for the automobile application.

Also they have a very long life expectancy and due to their robust solid state manufacture quite indestructible.

They are of course not without their challenges when used in the motor car for lighting.

For the application in the automobile they need to be built-in clusters and also it is often necessary to design the fitting as a complete unit, rather than the traditional method of a bulb and reflector.

The LED is a very directional light as opposed to your typical incandescent that casts a light in all directions and is focused, as required, using a lens.

All of this of course adds to the cost of development and manufacture. Nevertheless due to the long-term benefits we are seeing the rapid invasion of LED lighting in the automotive sphere.

Motor car manufacturers are embracing these in all their new automobile designs. Also we see aftermarket providers also offering them as a replacement for the incandescent bulb in existing motor cars. This does require, at times, small modifications to the existing circuit but is not beyond your local automotive repair or the home handy person.

The History of Mazda

Mazda Motor Corporation is a Japanese car manufacturer that operates in various automotive markets around the world. Mazda is based in the Fuchu Aki district in Hiroshima, Japan. The majority of their vehicles are produced and assembled in their Japan based plants. They are then distributed worldwide to places where Mazda operates. Aside from the vehicles produced in Japan, Mazda also operates several assembly plants throughout the globe. Every unit produced in these facilities is distributed directly to their respective markets for sale.

Mazda during its earliest foundation and the Second World War

Mazda’s earliest roots are traced back to the year 1920, when its founder Jujiro Matsuda and a small group of investors acquired a small company called, Toyo Cork Kogyo. Toyo Cork Kogyo manufactured machine tools for domestic sales. In 1927, the company changed its name into Toyo Kogyo Co. Ltd. Slowly, but surely, Toyo Kogyo’s operation gradually shifted from producing machine tools to the production of vehicles.

The shift in production resulted to the introduction of a three-wheeled truck, called the Mazda-Go in 1931. Aside from producing this vehicle, Toyo Kogyo was also involved in the manufacturing of military weapons used by the Japanese military. These weapons were used in the Second World War, particularly the Type 99 rifle series 30 to 35.

Mazda after the Second World War

After the Second World War, Mazda continued producing vehicles under the name Toyo Kogyo. But, this was subsequently changed to “Mazda” in 1984. According to the company’s website, this name was derived from “Ahura Mazda”, a Persian-Zoroastrianism God. However, most automotive historians also believe that the company’s name was derived from its founder “Jujiro Matsuda.” These claims still remain unverified, even up till today. Another question that goes unanswered, is why most of the company’s earliest vehicles carried the name “Mazda”, even-though the change of name was not yet implemented during those times.

Mazda’s popularity started to grow in 1960 when the company introduced its first real car, which was the Mazda R360. The Mazda R360 was a 4-seat, 2-door coupe, powered by a rear mounted air-cooled 356 cc V-twin engine. This engine was mated to either a 4-speed manual transmission or a 2-speed automatic transmission. That engine was capable of producing a maximum power output of up to 16 horsepower and 16 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine was capable of producing a top speed of about 52mph.

Aside from producing vehicles, Mazda’s operation also involved the development of the Wankel rotary engine. The company’s focus on developing this engine was basically triggered by Mazda’s desire to use this technology as a means of differentiating itself from other Japanese car manufacturers. Mazda’s efforts and resources used in developing the rotary engine eventually gained positive results. The company started selling the newly-developed engine in 1962. Five years later, Mazda released the limited edition Cosmo Sport. This 1967 sport was powered by Mazda’s rotary engine. This type of engine was also used in the current RX-8 engine. These events titled Mazda as the sole car manufacturer engaged in the production of the Wankel engines.

Mazda’s development and use of the rotary engine in the R100 and the RX Series increased the company’s exports a great deal. The increase in exports was eventually followed by Mazda’s expansion in other areas of the world. In 1968 Mazda started its formal operations in Canada. Two years after, Mazda began its operations in the American market and became very successful. As a result of its success in America, Mazda produced the Mazda Rotary Pickup, which was offered for North American buyers only.

The success of Mazda in the American and world markets, brought about by the growing demands for the rotary engine, suffered a major setback in 1973 when the “oil crisis” occurred. Fortunately, the company did not fully abandon the production of vehicles equipped with piston-powered engines. These vehicles saved Mazda complete collapse. As a result, the 4-cylinder powered models, such as the Mazda Familia and the Mazda Capella series, became very important during those times.

Despite the decline in demand for vehicles with rotary engines, Mazda was able to find a way to use them in some of their models. Instead of installing the rotary engine, Mazda has used them in sports cars. The Mazda RX-7 became the first recipient of this strategy in 1978, and was followed by the modern version RX-8. The company had also focused its attention in developing small and lightweight sports cars with powerful piston-powered engine. Mazda’s efforts to develop this type of sports car resulted in the production of the Mazda Roadster or popularly known as the Miata, in 1989. The Mazda Roadster was then given credit for reviving the existence of small sports cars, which started to decline in the later parts of the `70s.

Mazda-Ford Partnership

Mazda Motor Corporation developed a partnership with Ford Motor Company when Mazda experienced financial turmoil in the 1960s. Ford became a willing investor and the American car manufacturer earned a 7% financial stake in 1979, which had then increased to 27% during the `80s. Since Mazda had been suffering from financial difficulties, Ford continued to acquire some of the company’s stakes, and in 1996 Ford was able to gain 33.4% of Mazda’s financial stakes. These stakes, however, were sold by Ford in 2008, when the American car manufacturer was struck by the negative effects of the world financial crisis. As a result, Ford reduced its involvement with Mazda’s operation, which eventually allowed the Japanese car maker to handle its own affairs and engage the global automobile market with the utmost independence.

Aside from acquiring Mazda’s financial stakes, Ford was also involved in several projects with its newly established partner. Most of these projects were focused on the development of smaller cars and pickups. Aside from this, Mazda had also shared some of its resources with Ford. The Mazda Familia shared its platform with several Ford models, such as the Escort and the Laser. Mazda Capella’s architecture was also used in Ford’s Probe sports model and the Telstar sedan.

In addition to this, Mazda had also helped Ford develop some of its own vehicles, including the Ford Explorer in 1991. In fact, Mazda also sold a similar vehicle called the Mazda Navajo, but its sales became a failure. As a result, the Japanese car maker decided to discontinue sales of the Navajo. Mazda had also used the Ford Ranger as a base for its B-Series trucks. These trucks were sold in the North American market from 1994 to 2010. Due to poor sales, Mazda decided to discontinue the production of the B-Series as-well.

Mazda and Ford’s partnership started to weaken when the Japanese car maker was headed by several presidents, such as Henry Wallace in 1996, James Miller in 1997, and Mark Field, who was a Ford executive, in 1999. Under Field’s leadership, Mazda had started expanding its product line-up and marked the start of Mazda’s independence from Ford. The global economic crisis further weakened the alliance between the two companies and Ford then sold its part of the stakes on Mazda. In November 2010, Ford’s financial stake on Mazda was reduced to merely 3%, and this allowed Mazda to pursue its own interests and enhance its growth in the emerging markets. The partnership between the two companies is currently confined to several joint ventures and some technological information exchange.

Build Muscle Solo – No Spotter? No Problem

So you usually work out with a spotter, which is great. A good spotter will help you through those crucial last few reps, the ones that count. But what happens when your spotter is a no show? Don’t let your workout suffer because you don’t have someone to hold your hand.

Here are some techniques you can use to ensure you get a muscle tearing pump, and build muscle solo.

Technique number One: Forced Reps

When flying solo, forced reps are going to be best used when you can use one hand at a time. i.e. Dumbell curls, dumbell shoulder presses, you can even use the smith machine.

Take the dumbell preacher curl for example. You do your regular set of 8-10 reps. Once you start nearing failure, you use your free hand to assist yourself in raising the weight. Don’t assist too much, you want those last few reps to be as intense as possible.

Scientific research confirms the effectiveness of forced reps. In one study, growth hormone levels were shown to be three times higher when the muscle was pushed passed failure using forced reps, as apposed to ending the set when failure was reached. Another study also found that athletes using forced reps burned more fat over a 10 week period, than those who weren’t.

I think the findings speak for themselves here.

Technique Number Two: Negative Reps

We have covered this technique briefly in a past muscle building article, but we’re going to talk on using it as a one person parade, instead of having a spotter.

Usually, your spotter would lift the weight for you, and you would lower it as slowly as possible while focusing on the muscle being worked. Heavier weight than your one rep max is usually used here, so doing this without a spotter isn’t exactly a good idea.

Free weights are almost completely out of the question, but smith machines will work very well.

Take the bench press for example. Position yourself on the bench press, and load up a weight you would normally do 10-12 reps with. Push the weight up using both arms, and then remove one, and slowly lower the weight with one arm. Do this until failure is reached. You should be aiming for a 3-5 second negative movement here. Try to hit 5-8 reps per side.

Technique Number Four – Cheat Reps

While I would never advocate cheating in order to lift heavier weight, the advanced lifter can actually using cheating to push through failure and in turn build muscle.

A new gym goer may unintentionally cheat on just about every rep, this is both dangerous and for lack of a better word, stupid. I see it time and time again.

After completing your 8-10 reps with strict form (strict form should always be used, with the exception of cheat reps), losen up your form a bit and let other muscles assist in cranking out a couple more reps.

For example, on the triceps push-down, after reaching failure, learn forward a little and allow your bodys weight to assist you in getting out those last couple of reps.

Is Perseverance All That Impossible?

What can a nineteenth century naturalist say to present day people involved in fitness? Perhaps that our passion–fitness– should not be seen as one long interminable race, but rather a series of short ones. After all, Sir Walter did not become a distinguished naturalist by just staying at the same thing for his entire life.

One of the problems with Sir Walter is that he has a knighthood, That puts him in a different league–something egalitarians do not want to think about. Too often, when someone like this says anything, we wonder if he has any idea of what (we) commoners go through. But is this really fair?

We all know that fitness, like any thing else worthwhile, requires daily effort. That may seem much easier when it comes to someone like Sir Walter. After all, does a Knight of the Realm really know what it is like to commute, sit at a desk for eight to ten hours and get expected to do things which seem impossible, only return home to take care of the kids? Yet, he was distinguished in his field and that suggests the overcoming of obstacles. So, there must be some truth in what he says.Where might that be?

On the one hand, until we have been at fitness for quite some time, doing our daily workouts, never missing our supplements, always keeping with a gluten-free diet can feel like a fifty mile race with a finish line that keeps moving ahead of us. That can make most of us quit before we even start. Could Sir Walter be trying to spare us from something like that?

On the other hand, there is some merit in thinking of fitness as a long term proposition. Too many times, we get into merely attaining a particular goal. After that we can get back on with our lives. This is one of the chief causes of the yo-yo phenomenon, which happens after doing what the doctor said–namely lose fifty pounds to avoid diabetes. Right after we are out of the danger zone, we think we can go back to being normal. Surely the distinguished naturalist cannot be leading us down a path like this.

Perhaps Sir Walter is ultimately saying that we need something more vital than mere long term goal orientation. To be sure, like he was committed to science, we need a life long commitment to fitness. But he thought in terms of the day to day instead of merely hanging in there until retirement. That was how he became outstanding–how he remained fresh and relevant. This is why he talks about many short races.

That type of thinking has a much more enlivening effect during the short term. When each day is a race between our fitness self and our American good life self we have the opportunity of being victorious at doing the new right things. That is winning in spite of everything inside–everything (never excluding the adult and mature) which seems to be against us. It means getting to the club even though other things seem more pressing. It means buying those supplements even when times are hard. It means eating healthy meals even when real food seems so much more socially appropriate.

A fitness lifestyle gets us feeling the way we want. This is the best reason for always staying at it.That is true whether we are unemployed, desperately looking for work, or retired. But it must be done everyday– the same as the brushing of our teeth.

Most of us know that this is true. That is why we go to the club, buy our vitamins and never deviate from a low fat low sugar diet.Yet,until we have been at this for a very long time, it is no easy matter. We feel we are always competing against the tried and true–that is, mom’s three square meals a day, crashing in front of the tube after a long day, and staying clear of the pills we are not supposed to need.

We simply must beat that competitor each day.There is no other answer. We simply cannot be beaten by an opponent who reminds us of an unfinished project when we should be putting out; save the money instead of spending it on the supplements; eat like everyone else to keep from appearing odd.

The alternative is succumbing, thereby losing the race to this internal American good life competitor. What is so bad about that? Nothing, really. American healthiness will probably get us through to our nineties. Furthermore, coming in second may even get us the dubious distinction of being a normal good Joe or Joanne. After all, that is the way all of our friends and relatives are; and they are important. But, it will never get us into a whole other league like Sir Walter.

The good news is that we always can win if only we work at it–if only we persevere. The better news is that it actually becomes far easier if we limit our focus to one daily race at a time.

Floating – The Pianist Approach
